Truth and honesty. What do these words mean today in our society? The dictionary definition of truth is the actual, or real state of a matter. Honesty relates to being true to your self and others. In todays world truth is relavent to those who speak it. Today people ommit information and still justify this as truth. This can be considered a "half truth". A means of justifing half truths are many. The primay reason is one could say they did not want to hurt the other person. A simple example of this is when a partner asks if a particular outfit makes her/him look fat or ugly. The typical response would be to say "you look great in that dress/pants". The real truth in a definitve context would be "That dress/pants looks bad on you". You may ask yourself "Who is really hurt by a half truth?" I feel both the party who the comment was relayed to and the individual making the statement are both injured. The party receiving the postive "half truth" often has an inflated self esteem that is based upon a lie. The giver of the comment is sacrificing there identity and breeding distrust with there partner. Another common untruth accepted by society is the acceptance of incorrect monatary change in the transaction of goods. When one received 23 RMB in change when they know they should only have 13 RMB they take the money and go. Honesty? Will not the cashier be affected by this error. The consequences may be termination or reimbursment from there own pocket. We need to consider others and the ramificactions of dishonest behavior. I feel truth and honesty are fleeting values in todays society. Truth has become a meaningless word. Honesty has vanished from our streets and homes. Who can you trust today? Can you even trust your wife/husband. The answer is sadly no. I for one take a stand to be truthful to all people. The truth may not be easy, it may hurt, but is is best said. DO YOU WANT TO HEAR THE TRUTH? I for one do.
